New Developments in Wake County

Here are the major new visitor developments that are contributing to the Raleigh area's stature as a modern establishment—the thriving state capital of North Carolina.

MORGAN STREET FOOD HALL & MARKET (Opening Summer 2017)

This new retail and dining concept from Hibernian Hospitality Group will be a 20,000-square-foot venue in downtown Raleigh that plays home to more than 60 different food stalls, restaurants and market opportunities, each ranging from 30 to 550 square feet in size. Vendors will offer high-quality, chef-driven specialty foods with a wide range of diversity and affordable pricing. The venue is expected to be open by the end of summer 2017. 

GREGG MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN (Opening Aug. 26, 2017)

Transforming the current North Carolina State University chancellor's residence into the Gregg Museum of Art and Design, this $9.8-million project will result in a freestanding, LEED Silver-certified facility that includes the 1927 residence, a 15,000-plus square foot contemporary addition and various outdoor spaces. Slated to open in the second half of 2017, the Gregg Museum project is part of a total of $500 million in building projects under construction or slated to begin in the next year at North Carolina State University. The contemporary addition is being guided by The Freelon Group, which has designed numerous university buildings and museums around the country; the outdoor spaces are being guided by Surface 678.

CRABTREE NORTH (Opening late Fall 2017)

The space across the street from Crabtree Valley Mall will soon be home to another mixed-use lifestyle center called Crabtree North. This 20-acre development will include 125,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and hotel space, plus is zoned for 708 residential units. Also included will be a pedestrian bridge across Glenwood Ave. connecting Crabtree North with Crabtree Valley Mall. This project is being developed by EYC Companies.

UNION STATION (Opening early 2018)

Downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District will house the new Union Station transportation hub, which began construction on Jan. 8, 2016. This major project will replace the current Amtrak Station (located on Cabarrus St.) and the Moore Square Transit Station, which is where all downtown Raleigh buses currently make a stop and is GoRaleigh's transfer facility. The new Union Station will accommodate longer trains and have larger platforms, amongst other improvements. The entire project will cost approximately $79.8 million, $18 million of which will be provided by the City of Raleigh, and is scheduled to be ready for intercity passenger train service by the first quarter of 2018.

FUQUAY-VARINA ARTS CENTER (Opening early 2018)

The Town of Fuquay-Varina broke ground in March of 2017 on a project that will bring a performing arts theatre, classrooms, studios and more to downtown Fuquay-Varina. The Fuquary-Varina Arts Center, a project that will renovate and expand on an existing buliding, is expected to take 10 months to complete and cost $3.5 million. The plan, designed by Szostak Design of Chapel Hill, will bring a 300-seat theatre to the new two-story expansion, with capacity for a total of 400 for conferences and speaking events, plus include specialized classrooms for painting, computer media and other types of art, a dance studio, an art gallery and more.
